Maria Isabel Ramalho Ortigão has completed her doctorate studies in Education at Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio) in 2005 and her dissertation received an Honorable Mention at Capes Theses Award (2006). She is an associate professor at the School of Education of Rio de Janeiro State University (UERJ) and Pro-Scientist at the same institution. She participated in Programa Jovem Cientista do Nosso Estado (Young Scientist of Our State Program) – Faperj (from 2011 to 2019) and, nowadays, she participates in Programa Cientista do Nosso Estado (2019) (Scientist of Our State Program). She coordinated the Postgraduate Program in Education (Proped) from July 2017 to July 2019 and the Postgraduate Program in Education, Culture and Communication in Urban Peripheries (Baixada Fluminense School of Education / UERJ) from March 2010 to April 2013. She was vice-coordinator of the Southeastern Forum of Postgraduate Programs in Education from 2017 to 2019. She is, and was, member of the Editorial Committee of journals such as Boletim de Educação Matemática – BOLEMA (Mathematical Education Bulletin), Educação Matemática em Revista (Mathematical Education in Review) and Zetetiké. She was member of the executive board of Regional Rio de Janeiro of Sociedade Brasileira de Educação Matemática – SBEM (Brazilian Society of Mathematical Education) from 2007 to 2012. She was coordinator of GT Avaliação e Educação Matemática of SBEM (Mathematical Assessment and Education Work Group – WG8) from 2012 to 2018 and vice-coordinator of GT Educação Matemática  (Mathematical Education Work Group – WG 19) of Associação Nacional de Pós-graduação e Pesquisa em Educação – ANPEd (National Association of Postgraduate Studies and Research in Education). She is leader of the CNPq Research Group “Políticas de Avaliação, Desigualdades e Educação Matemática” (Evaluation, Inequalities and Mathematical Education Policies).
